Kanchanjunga (8600m) is the 3rd highest peak in the world. It is located on the border of Nepal and Sikkim ((India). Trek in the area east of Arun valley offer remarkable experience in ethnic culture, landscape, scenic view, birds and flowers. You will discover unspoiled and extraordinary culture of Limbu (Kiranti) in the middle hilly region and Bhotia (Tibetan) people in the higher elevation. You get close up view of the awesome and magnificent Kanchanjunga range that extends from north to south. This region is very remote. In the past most visitors were explorers and mountaineers only.
Fly to Biratnagar and drive to Dhankutta, Hille and to Basantapur. Hille is a small town north of Dhankutta. The rough road from Hille ends at Basantapur. You follow the main trail via the ridge that climb gradually to Gupha Pokhari and cross Milke Danda (hill). Milkedanda range has its ridge full of rhododendron forest. In the spring the whole hill is covered with rainbow of colours. It is the best place to see varieties of rhododendron forests. The trail gradually ascends up to a ridge and descends to Tamur khola (river). Follow the river towards northeast to Gunsa. Travel further on the rugged trail to the glacier at Pangpema (5150m) to see the magnificent view of the northern face of Kanchanjunga and several other beautiful peaks. Retrace the trail to Gunsa and traverse across the snow to cross 5183m Lapsang la (pass). Visit South base camp of Kanchanjunga at Yalung glacier to see close up view of gigantic peak Mt. Kanchanjunga. The Yalung glacier is an inner sanctuary of truly wild and raw mountain. Retrace the trail back to Ramze and travel south to Gopte or Taplejung to take bus to Ilam. Stay overnight at Ilam. Ilam has tea garden spread all over its rolling hills. Travel to Biratnagar to take flight back to Kathmandu.

03: Trek day 1. Dhankutta-Hile -
Basantapur (125km):Fly to Biratnagar on a regular scheduled flight that leaves in the morning about 9am. Arrive Biratnagar at 9.35am. Meet trek guide and staffs upon arrival at Biratnagar. Travel by jeep or bus to Dhankutta. The drive is about 3 hours. Continue the drive to Basantapur (50km from Dhankutta). Arrive Basantapur around 4pm. The highway from Biratnagar turns north at Itahari –a small cross- road town - to Dharan and Dhankutta. Dharan lies at the foothill where Terai (plain) starts. The road from this bustling city gradually climbs to Dhankutta. As you leave the hot plain the drive to this hill station is pleasant. The distance from Itahari to Dhankutta is 75 km. There are good view of the eastern Himalayan range from the ridge and lots of rhododendron flower in spring on Milke danda on way to Basantapur. Basantapur is 25km from Dhankutta. The area is well known for recruiting of Gorkha soldiers from Rai and Limbu ethnic people specially in British army. This area used to be important place east of Arun river known as Limbuan or Pallo (other side) Kirat, originally carved out as an autonomous kingdom within Nepal. They establish Kirateshor dynasty in 7th century BC in Kathmandu and ruled for 1000 years. Their language is Tibeto-Burman, and worship ancestors. They have Mongoloid features.
04: Trek day 2. Chowki (2750m) - 6 hour:
05: Trek day 3. Beyond Gupha Pokhari (2980m) - 6 hour:
It is relatively easy walk about 3 hour along the ridge from Chowki through enchanting forest of fir, rhododendron and bamboo. The view of Mt. Makalu and Chamlang continued to be seen. The trail passes through small ponds and scattered houses to reach the village of Gupha Pokhari in about 3 hour. There are small stone houses at the Pokhari and Tibetan prayer flag flirting with the wind. Villages of ethnic people of this region- Limbu and Rai - dots this area. The trail continues to wind around ridge and you walk up and down the mountain path to climb a pass at 3025 meter and descent towards Dhoban. Make further descent to Gurja Gaon. Camp before Gurja Gaon. As you desent you get to see view of Jannu and Kanchanjunga.
06: Trek day 4 Mitlung (970m) - 7 hour:
07: Trek day 5. Chirwa (1240m) - 6 hour:
The trail follows the Tamur river occasionally winding up the hill and descending to rice fields and walking along the river for more than 4 hours. You pass through some beautiful rock gorges and the occasional small Buddhist villages. Camp at Chirwa. There are abundant of birds in this area.
08: Trek day 6. Sakathon (1650m) - 5 hour:
09: Trek day 7. Amjilasa (2430m) - 5 hour:
A steep and long climb up the reasonably good trail. From the basin of the river you walk a steep but gradual trail to come out on the ridge top to get a beautiful view of the river valley far below and snow peaks of the Himalayan at a distance. There are sparkling clean streams and several yak-pasture at Amjilassa.
10: Trek day 8. Kyapra (2820m) - 5 hour:
11: Trek day 9. Gunsa (3480m)- 5 hour:
The trail continues to follow Gunsha-river. The trail pass through cultivated land and along the riverbanks through dense forest of bamboo, fir, and scattered rhododendron trees in the hills. The water in the river makes steep drop that makes many beautiful waterfalls and crystal clear pools. Rhododendron forest. The moderately steep but pleasant trail takes about 3 hour to reach Phere through cultivated land. Descend to Gunsha-khola and climb steep trail to the village of Gunsha. It is moderately large Bhotia (Tibetan) village with small and neat farmland.

A fairly difficult trail that climbs up alongside the river. Several magnificent waterfalls are encountered along the trail. Yak herders may be met along the trail. You get to see excellent views of Kumbhakarna (Jannu) and other high, snow and glacier covered peaks. snow glacier starts unfolding as your journey progress as you gain altitude the vegetation starts getting sparse, the terrain becomes rocky and barren. At Kangbachen you camp on the grassy field. The
14: Trek day 12. Lhonak (4780m) - 5 hour:
15: Trek day 13. Pangpema (5150m) - 3 hour:
Continue to walk along the Kanchanjunga glacier. The day is short due to high elevation. You walk slowly and gradually to Pangpema thereby gaining elevation. The day at Pangpema provides wonderful opportunity to hike in near by hills to get better view of the surrounding mountain and to explore the glacier. There are incredible view of Yalung Kang and North Col. of Kanchanjunga. You may encounter Blue Sheep, musk deer, and Lamorgiers (a big bird with its wing span of 3 meter). The surrounding view and that of Kanchanjunga is simply overwhelming.
16: Trek day 14. Ghunsa (3480m) - 5 hour:
18: Trek day 16. Cross Lapsang la-pass (5183m) & Camp at Lapsang - 6 hour:
19: Trek day 17. Yalung glacier (4890m) - 5 hour:
The trail from Lapsang valley passes through a small pond and skirt around a ridge that leads to the open wider glacier area. There you can see the panoramic view of Rathong (6678m), Kabru South (7317m), and kokthan (6147m). The walk to Ramze is about an hour. After Ramze you enter Yalung glacier that reveals magnificent view of Kanchanjunga. The magnificent mountain looms large in front of you. The trail to Yalung glacier is quite rough. The up and down trail are steep at several points. As you approach your campsite view of Jannu peak appears. You get overwhelmed by the huge mountain that engulfs you. From the vantagepoint of several hills you can get fantastic view of the mountain.
20: Trek day 18. Return to Lapsang and to Tseram - 7 hour:
21: Trek day 19. Torontan (3080m) - 6 hour:
You leave behind the terminal moraine of Yalung glacier, loose gravel trail and the view of Kabru (7353m) and Talung peak (7349m). You reach a small hut at Whata in about 2 hour. Continue to trek to Torontan for another two and half-hour.
22: Trek day 20. Chittre (3000m) - 3 hour:
23: Trek day 21. Yamphudin (2150m) - 5 hour:
The trail from Chittre descent to Omje Khola (river) and climb to Dhupi Bhanjyang (3360 m) pass and descent to Yamphudin. It is the last remote village on the trail to Kanchanjunga. You continue to walk through thick rhododendron forest. At several places the trail is quite rough.
24: Trek day 22. Kedan - 7 hour:
25: Trek day 23. Ambegudin (1340m) - 6 hour :
On this day you enter cultural belt of Limbu. You come across several large and small villages and cultivated rice fields. Make gradual decsend to Pedang (1340m), cross Kabeli Khola (river) through suspension bridge, climb up and down the ridges, cross several streams and finally climb through rice field to Ambegudin. It is an interesting day to meet village people and observe their culture as you pass from village to village.

27: Trek day 25. Gopetar - Ilam (40km) - 4 hour drive
28: Trek day 26. Drive to Biratnagar (190km) - 5 hour drive.
29: Kathmandu: Free day for shopping etc
