First time Prince Charles did this trek. Since then it has become one of the popular short trek. You follow the trail along the intricate terraced field. There are mustard field, citrus groves, banana trees, rhododendron and oak forest. You pass through small villages that have remarkable ethnic diversity of Nepal. Highest elevation on the trek is 1830 meter.

The trek starts from Kalikasthan (1372m) near Pokhara. You walk through Shyaklung (1734m) village and Chisopani danda (ridge). Trek ends at Begnas-Tal (lake). Trek ends with a drive to Pokhara (10 km). The trek is less travelled by trekkers.

Gurung villages: Annapurna region is home of Gurung, one of the main ethnic in Nepal. Annapurna foothills regions dots with Gurung villages. In the Royal trek most often you find many Gurung villages along the trail as you trek in higher elevation. You find Gurung villages in the high and steep slopes. They grow maize and millet near their houses and go down to the valley floor to cultivate their rice fields. In summer they take their cattle to high pastures land as high as 3800 meters. It is on the southern flank of Annapurna. Local Gurung is skilled in wild honey hunting. Eric Valli and Diane Summer shot the film “Honey Hunters of Nepal” in the area of Annapurna foothill. The Gurung are Buddhist. But they have their unique customs very different from other ethnic Buddhist communities. They have mongoloid features; they are short and stocky. Their ethnicity is Tibeto-Burman. Their women are attractive. Gurung men and women wear very distinct and different attire.

Gurung are well known for their bravery in first and 2nd world war. They played an important role in the expansion of Gurkha territory to make Nepal. Young lads from this ethnic group has served in the British Army since 1815. Then East India Company was the vanguard of British forces in India. In 1987 they helped suppress the revolt mutiny in the British Indian military. Since then they were are part of the British Imperial Army. They served with pride and distinction in the Nepalese, British and the Indian armies.

Brahmin and Chettri Villages. In the beginning of the trek you come across villages inhabited by Brahmins and Chettris. Often villages have mixed communities. The ancestors of these communities migrated from India. Most of the young people work for government and security forces. Lads from Chettris clans are in security forces; they are a martial clan. Brahmins have been playing a major role in the administration of Nepal. They used to have considerable influence in the people; it is because of the role as a priest in the community. (People of Nepal by Dor Bahadur Bista)

Resting place (Chautara).Along the trial you pass through many resting-places known as Chautara. These resting places built-in stone are for weary travelers. Stone steps are to sit around and a large fig tree (ficus religiosa) are for shade and shelter. Porters and travelers use resting-place for a quick break. The local philanthropic people usually built this resting place. Building such places is a religious act in Nepalese society.

Magnificent view of the Himalayas. Many of these resting places offer fine views of the Himalayas to the north. You can see glimpses of Dhaulagiri (8172 m) to the west. The swiping view of the entire Annapurna range is very awesome. The series of peaks you can see are Annapurna South (7195 m), Annapurna I (8078 m), Annapurna III (7195 m), Annapurna IV (7507 m) and Annapurna II (7937 m). Machapuchre (6997 m) looms in the west and Lamjung Himal (6985 m) is closer to the northeast. And in the eastern horizon, you can see the view of Himalchuli (7835 m) and Manaslu (8125 m). Two eight thousand meter peaks out of eight in Nepal are in Annapurna. There are total of fourteen peaks in the world that rises over 8000 meters. The views of all these great mountains from the foothill of Annapurna are fantastic.
