Sherpa Villages trek - 8 days

This trek is an introduction to Everest and Sherpa villages, is for anyone who has dreamed of visiting the land of the Sherpa people and standing within sight of Mount Everest. The trek starts at Lukla (2805m) with an easy walk to Phakding. The trail to Namche Bazaar (3445m) gradually ascends. After an overnight stay at Namche the trail descend to the Dudh Koshi river and make steep ascend to Thyangbohce (3866m). The trail from the monastery gradually descends to the river and continues to the open valley at Pangboce (3908m). Retrace the trail back to Lukla via Chumoa. The highlight of the short trek is sherpa villages and their culture,and  of course high mountains.

Day 01: Flight to Lukla and trek to Phakding [2656m]. Overnight at Tea house/Lodge

The flight to Lukla, with a hair raising landing on a steep mountain runway, brings us to the village of Lukla [2900m]. Start your along the Dudh Kosi Valley.

Day 02: Trek to Namche [3450m] . Overnight at Tea house/Lodge

From Phakding, you cross and re-cross the river on high suspension bridges. Beyond Monjo is the entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park. The park was set-up to conserve this fragile mountain environment. You then ascend steeply to Namche and along the way. Namche is the main trading village in the Khumbu and has a busy Saturday market – a meeting place for the Hindu traders from the lowlands and the Tibetan yak caravans that have crossed the glaciated Nangpa La.

Day 03: Trek to Khumjung [3786m]. Overnight at Tea house/Lodge

Ascending from Namche Bazaar, you pass the airstrip at Syangboche and the Japanese-built Everest View Hotel. From the hotel, there are magnificent views of the valley and Everest. You walk to the picturesque village of Khumjung with many old traditional houses and a gompa at the top end of town. At the nearby village of Khunde, is the famous hospital built by Sir Edmund Hillary, an important center of health care in the region.

Day 04: Trek to Thyangboche [3864m]. Overnight at Tea house/Lodge

Heading east, we pass a large chorten and then descend to a bridge across the Dudh Kosi at Phunki Tenga. From the river, the trail ascends through a forest of pine and rhododendron, before arriving at Thyangboche Monastery. The views here are truly awesome, from the beautiful Ama Dablam to Lhotse and Everest at the head of the valley. The gompa has been rebuilt since a tragic fire in 1989 and is well worth a visit.

Day 05: Excursion to Pangboche [3908m]. Overnight at Tea house/Lodge

Excursion to Pangboche Monastery and the nunnery at Deboche. The monastery at Pangboche, founded in 1667, is the oldest in the Khumbu region. The magnificent views of Ama Dablam are a highlight of today’s walk.

Day 06: Trek to Chumoa [2700m]. Overnight at Tea house/Lodge

From Thyangboche, we head back down through the forest to Phunki Tenga with its water-driven prayer wheels. With the Everest and Lhotse receding at the distance, we make our way back down to Namche and descend further to camp by the river at Chumoa.

Day 07: Trek to Lukla [2900m] Overnight at Tea house/Lodge

Our final day’s trekking follows the Dudh Kosi back down to Lukla. This last evening in the mountains presents an ideal opportunity to say goodbye party with the guide and porters.

Day 08: Flight to Kathmandu

Early breakfast and head to the airstrip for the return journey to Kathmandu.
