This trek to south base camp of Mt Kanchanjunga (8586m) is unprecedented adventure to the inner sanctuary of truly wild and raw mountain which is the third highest after Mt. Everest. It used to be mostly visited by explorers and mountaineers only in the past when its access was difficult. Beginning with low mountain and hills passing though rich cultural belt of Limbu villages you travel gradually to the high rugged landscape into the Himalayan wilderness. Your travel through mountain trails that goes up and down several times offer panoramic and great views of the eastern Himalayan range, wildlife, and cultural experience throughout most part of the trek. The walk from Taplejung that has an STOL airstrip to Yamphudin and to the south base camp of Kanchanjunga would give you amazing trek experience. At the end of this trek an overnight stay in Ilam where there are beautiful tea garden and rolling hills would make your trek even memorable.
Kanchanjunga (8600m) is the 3rd highest peak in the world. The whole area east of Arun valley offer remarkable experience in ethnic culture, landscape, scenic view, birds and flowers. As you travel through the land you will discover unspoiled and extraordinary culture of Limbu (Kiranti) in the middle hilly region and Bhotia (Tibetan) people in the higher elevation. You get to see awesome and magnificent view of Kanchanjunga range that extends from north to south.
First we fly to Biratnagar and travel to Taplejung. Then walk through several Limbu villages before descending to Kabeli Khola (river). Further on from Yamphudin we head to South base camp of Kanchanjunga. At Yalung glacier (4890m) you get to see magnificent view of Kanchanjunga that looms large in front of you. View of Jannu and other peaks are visible enroute. At the base camp you can get overwhelmed by the huge mountain that engulfs you. Several hills provide vantage points to view the mountain in its entirety. We Climb the trail back to Tseram (2770m), Chittre (3000m) and Yamphudin (2150m). The return lag of our journey pass through thick rhododendron forest, rough trail, several up and down winding path and, mountain ridges, huts, cultivated rice fields, streams and suspension bridge. Finally we descend through thick cultural belt of Limbu villages to the bridge at Kabeli Khola (river) and climb gradually to the ridge at Gopetar. Drive to Ilam through the beautiful ridge covered with tea garden. Drive further down to Biratnagar (190km) or Bhadrapur to take Flight back to Kathmandu.
Day 01: Fly to Biratnagar
Transfer to airport. Fly to Biratnagar. Normally the scheduled flight is in the morning. It is 35 minute journey to the border city. Depending upon travel condition we either take bus to Taplejung via Ilam or connecting flight to Taplejung.
Day 02: Travel to Taplejung. Trek to Thembewa (1880m)
The flight from Biratnagar to Taplejung takes about 30 minute. Your flight lands at Suketar (2020m) about an hour walk to Taplejung proper. Trek to Tambewa. We climb gradually to 2300 meter ridge through rhododendron forest and then descend to Lali Kharka. Make further descent to Thembewa. It is a Limbu Village with a large cultivated field. We make camp here for overnight stay.
Day 03: Trek to Keswa (2000 m)
After a short walk up to the ridge we descend to the terraced rice filed at Pokara then cross the suspension bridge across the Phewa Khola (1430m) meters and climb again the steep trail to another Limbu village Kunnjari (1700 m). We continue to make a long climb to a pass (Bhanjyang – 2120 m). From its vantage point you can see Kanchenjunga and other prominent peaks including Jannu and Yalung kang. After the pass we gradually descend to Keswa (2000m). This is an interesting day to see the mountain, waves of mountain ridges with flower and the valley.
Day 04: Trek to Mamanke (1900m)
We descend to the river and climb through forest to Loppiding village. We continue to climb up and down the ridges until the village Phon Phon is reached. We continue to descend through the western side of valley made by Kabeli Khola (river), climb up the gentle ridge and cross Ponpe Danra. You get to see beautiful view of Jannu peak. Make further descent to Mamankhe (1900m). It is one of the prosperous Limbu village.
Day 05: Trek to Yamphudin (1670m)
We walk through more of these up and down trails through ridge and streams. And finally descend to Yamphudin situated in the junction of Kabeli Khola and Omje Khola. There is a police check post at Yamphudin. Beyond Yamphudin you enter into wilderness region.
Day 06: Trek through Omje Khola to camp site beyond Chitre
We Cross Omje Khola and follow the up stream trail of Kabeli Khola and then climb the trail through corn and barley field to Darachuk. The trail continues to climb to Dubi Bhanjyang (2540 m). After the pass descend through forest to Omje Khola (2340 m) again. We cross the Omje khola (river) upstream and climb to Chitre. Our camp site is further near Lamite Bhanjyang (3400m).
Day 07: Trek to Torontan (3080m)
On this day we travel through Pines and Rhododendrons forest to Lamite Bhanjyang and cross to Simbua Khola. You get to see great view of Jannu. Instead of the steep and loose gravel route to the river we take the gentler route. Your trek guide would figure out the best possible way to descend. Once on the river we cross it several times to reach Torontan. We make this a short day to allow for higher elevation.
Day 08: Trek to Tseram (3770m)
The trail to the source of Yalung glacier passes through thick pine and rhododendron forest. Superb mountain views are visible. The trail in the widened valley becomes easier as you approach Tseram. Our camp would be at the nice flat surface for which we have to climb a little bit.
Day 09: Trek to Ramche (4560m)
We climb the trail along the moraine of the Yalung Glacier. After sometime the valley opens up as you approach Yalung. It is high pasture land for yaks at the elevation of 4200 meters. We climb to Yalung and then traverse through Yalung Glacier to Lapsang (4430m). The path is quite rough with loose rock. We pass through mani walls and a stone house that mark the end of tree line (4000 m). The trail from Lapsang valley passes through a small pond and skirt around a ridge that leads to the open and wider glacial area. Here you can see the panoramic view of Rathong (6678m), Kabru South (7317m), and Kokthan (6147m). The walk to Ramze (4620m) where there is a big meadow takes about an hour. Climb alongside the moraine through scrub junipers up a stream to a lake at Lapsang, 4430 metres.
Day 10: Yalung glacier (4890m)
After Ramze you enter Yalung glacier that reveals magnificent view of Kanchanjunga. The magnificent mountain looms large in front of you. The trail to Yalung glacier is quite rough. The up and down trail are steep at several points. Depending upon the weather condition we either make a day trip to Yalung Glacier or prepare camp there. You can be overwhelmed by the huge mountain that engulfs you. From the vantage point of a chorten at 4800 meter you can get fantastic view of this gigantic mountain.
Day 11: Extra day for rest and exploration
Day 12: Return to Lapsang and to Tseram (2770m)
Retrace the trail back to Ramje (4560m) and Lapsang. The trail continues through several stone huts, down to Simbua Khola (river) and climb to reach Tseram (2770m) in about 3 hour.
Day 13: Trek back to Torontan (3080m)
You leave behind the terminal moraine of Yalung glacier, loose gravel trail and the view of Kabru (7353m) and Talung peak (7349m) and reach a small hut at Whata in about 2 hour. We retrace the trail through thick forest of pine and rhododendron to Torontan (3080m) through the trail high above Simbhua Khola (river) which would take about 3 hour.
Day 14: Trek back to Chittre (3000m)
Today it is gong to be a short day walk. Our return journey follows up and down the trail to Simbhua Khola (river) and again climb up to cross a pass at 3430 meter at Lamite Bhanjyang that reveals the low hills in the south and Jannu. Kanchanjunga himal can still be seen. We descend gradually to Chittre.
Day 15: Return trek to Yamphudin (1670m)
The trail from Chittre descent to Omje Khola (river) and climb to Dhupi Bhanjyang (pass at 3360 m) and again descend to Yamphudin. It is the last remote village on the trail from Yalung glacier. We continue our return journey through thick rhododendron forest and tough trail at several places.
Day 16: Trek to Khewang (1740m)
You leave behind the hard part of the trail and follow several up and down winding path through mountain ridges, huts, rice fields and streams. Descend the trail to the bridge at Kabeli Khola (river). From the bridge you climb up the ridge and descend to Khewang.
Day 17: Trek to Ambegudin (1340m)
On this day you enter cultural belt of Limbu. You come across several large and small villages and cultivated rice fields. Make gradual descend to Pedang, cross Kabeli Khola (river) through suspension bridge, climb up and down the ridges, cross several streams and finally climb through rice field to Ambegudin. It is an interesting day to meet village people and observe their culture as you pass from village to village.
Day 18: Trek to Shinam, Kabeli Khola and to Medibung
The trail climbs up and down to Shinam (1110m) where many commodities and food are available. On this day you pass through several villages and cultivated rice fields. From Shinam we descend to Kabeli Khola (river). Cross the suspension bridge and climb gradually to the ridge high above to Medibung.
Day 19: Trek to Gopetar and Ilam (40km)
We gradually climb the main trail to a ridge and walk up and down the trail and reach a large village at Gopetar. The walk is pleasant through rhododendron forest. From the road head at Gopetar take bus to Ilam. The drive takes about 4 hour to cover 40km streatch through winding road to Ilam. It is a large town on the beautiful ridge covered with tea garden.
Day 20: Drive to Bhadrapur or Biratnagar (190km) and Fly to Kathmandu
After breakfast leave Ilam. The road pass through beautiful hills covered with tea garden. The drive to Bhadrapur airport takes about 3 hour. Our alternative choice is drive to Biratnagar (5 hour) if flight from Bhadrapur is not possible. Fly to Kathmandu. Upon arrival transfer to hotel.
Note: This trek involves several days in the high elevation above 4000 to 5000 meter. So, it is important to bring appropriate clothing and shoes. All participants must be physically fit. This trek is physically demanding though mountaineering skill is not necessary. It is important to remember not to endanger the lives of other trek members, Sherpas, and porters by climbing a peak or continuing the trek in unsafe conditions. The schedule stops as shown above are a guideline only. It may change due to logistic reason and other condition like weather, etc. that are beyond our control. Flight to remote mountain airstrip is subject to weather and technical condition. All flights are in early morning. In winter the thick fog in Kathmandu airport in the morning may delay subsequent flights to and from other destinations. It is important to allow 2 night before and 3 night after the trek in Kathmandu to allow possible flight delay in the mountain. There is no refund for unused service whatsoever be the reason after the trip has begun.
